COMMANDO: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JOHNNY RAMONE

AVAILABLE IN STORES & ONLINE NATIONWIDE APRIL 2012

The ultimate music autobiography arrives at last in the form of Commando: The Autobiography of Johnny Ramone out nationwide on April 2nd, 2012 from Abrams Image. THE definitive book on The Ramones, Commando is the first and only truly autobiographical work written by a founding member of the legendary Ramones chronicling his life, and the story of the band itself, from start to finish. Johnny authors a brutally honest and detailed firsthand account of the band, from inception and their humble beginnings at CBGB in 1974 all the way through to their retirement in 1996 and beyond. This is the real deal, straight from the source—a razor sharp stiletto from the grave delivering the story that has never been told before.

Tommy Ramone recently shared some insight on "Commando" with the Associated Press:

"Johnny Ramone’s autobiography is a no holds bared, straight forward book written in a no-nonsense style that is Johnny personified. His story is written in his own actual words, so the reader gets an insight into what made him the unique, charismatic and exciting individual that he was. It also gives a great view of the Ramones from Johnny’s perspective." - Tommy Ramone

The Ramones emerged from New York City's underground rock scene in the mid 70's to become a global, genre-defining force for rock & roll. Johnny Ramone, (born John Cummings 1948–2004), found his reprieve from a dead-end life through rock and roll as a founding member of one of the most influential bands of all time. Despite his ultimate success with The Ramones, Johnny never really strayed from his working-class roots and attitude. The tough guy from the streets of Queens assumed the role of the tough guy in the band who kept The Ramones focused and moving forward, ultimately securing the seminal band’s place in rock history. The Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 18, 2002, and nearly a decade later, the seminal band was awarded a Grammy for lifetime achievement.

Commando is Johnny’s story and the story of The Ramones told in his own words. Insightful and introspective, the 176-page, visually driven memoir walks through Johnny's days as a founding member of one of the world's most iconic bands and also chronicles his personal life beyond the stage. Never afraid to speak his mind, it includes raw and unflinching opinions of the band as well as his fellow peers in music and even the struggle with cancer that ultimately took him. Grounded in decades of his own meticulous records and notes, Johnny also shares his personal assessment of The Ramones catalog, several of his brilliantly eccentric Top Ten Lists, rare historical artifacts and scores of personal and professional photos, most of which have never been seen before.

Commando: The Autobiography of Johnny Ramone will be released in stores and online nationwide on April 2nd, 2012 from Abrams Image for $24.95 with pre-ordered copies available through the Johnny Ramone Army Online Store. E-book will be available on Kindle, iPad, Nook, Kobo and Sony Reader. Global demand for the book is already such that rights have been pre-sold in four different languages throughout Europe and Brazil with more soon to be announced.

Among other incredible offerings, "Commando" includes a foreward written by sole surviving founding member, drummer, Tommy Ramone, and an epilogue written by Johnny's close friend (and daughter to the King), Lisa Marie Presley.

For more, including additional insight from Johnny's wife and companion of over two decades, Linda Ramone, read the exclusive feature article by the Associated Press on "Commando: The Autobiography of Johnny Ramone" arriving April 2012.

Johnny Ramone Tee
Ramones Hey Ho Let's Go Tee
Ramones Dr. Shaw Tee

JOHN VARVATOS JOINS THE JRA
& TEAMS WITH THE RAMONES

Here are a few words direct from the man behind the collection:

"Working on a Ramones clothing collaboration is a huge honor. The Ramones are one of my favorite bands ever and true icons and innovators. I first saw them in 1977 when I drove from Detroit to catch them at CBGB's. It was one of the most electric and energized shows I have ever seen. Gabba Gabba Hey!!!!" – John Varvatos

Now available in the John Varvatos line is a limited edition capsule collection featuring two exclusive Ramones designs ... and for all of you JRA Commandos—a very special vintage Johnny Ramone piece too!

Johnny Ramone Tee:
The intense and majestic "Johnny" tee showcases the innovator of the stripped down, in your face, punk rock guitar sound, Johnny Ramone. The incredible oversized print of Johnny, live on stage with the Ramones in ‘78 at the Palladium in New York City, reproduces a classic photo by rock lens artisan Stephanie Chernikowski on ultra-soft charcoal heather. Stephanie’s work has been exhibited in galleries around the world, and published in "Rolling Stone", "The Village Voice", and the "New York Times" to name a few. Her award nominated photo book "Dream Baby Dream: Images from the Blank Generation" chronicles the punk years in New York City, and was published by Henry Rollins’ 2-13-61 publishing imprint. The back print of the tee says it all in one word, “JOHNNY” branded in large distressed type.

Ramones Hey Ho Let's Go Tee:
"Hey Ho Let's Go" 2-sided ultra soft black tee inspired by the classic simplicity of the Ramones features a pocket print of the band’s iconic eagle logo emblazoned with the names of the founding fathers of punk: "Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and Tommy" plus an appropriately suited "HEY HO LET’S GO!" large type back-print.

Ramones Dr. Shaw Tee:
Authentic to the classically themed cartoon T-shirts often worn by the founding members of the Ramones back in the day, the "Dr Shaw" design features some fantastic, classic "Seuss" inspired artwork by cartoonist Scott Shaw. With concept and colors by Hugh Brown, the "Dr Shaw" Ramones art (and illustrated story!), initially graced the comic book pages of the "Weird Tales of the Ramones" boxset by Rhino back in 2005. The design, now available for the very first time ever on apparel, can be found vibrantly reproduced on this great new burnout crewneck, heather grey Ramones tee by John Varvatos—while supplies last. Not surprisingly, the exclusive "Dr. Shaw" tee, as well the others in the line, have reportedly been flying off the shelves and selling out quickly at most shops. Pick one up, while you still can...

The ultra-soft, super lightweight, sandblasted cotton tees are available now, for a limited time, wherever John Varvatos clothing is sold, or order online at the links above. Look for more of the collaboration/collection to come ...

Linda Ramone with Johnny's Memorial Statue (Photo by Paul Redmond)
JOHNNY RAMONE STATUTE UNVEILED IN LOS ANGELES 6 YEARS AGO TODAY...

On January 14, 2005 the 8-ft, bronze, Johnny Ramone Memorial Statue was unveiled at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA by Johnny's wife and companion of over two-decades, Linda Ramone.

Many of Johnny's closest friends were there to celebrate the unveiling, including Lisa-Marie Presley (daughter of Johnny's hero, Elvis Presley), Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, founding member, producer and original drummer of the Ramones: Tommy Ramone, Actor Vincent Gallo, musician John Frusciante (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and countless others close to the rock icon.

Underneath the monument is a plaque bearing a statement, dictated by Johnny prior to his death, which reads: “If a man can tell if he's been successful in his life by having great friends, then I have been very successful.”

The statue has become a place for fans to gather in remembrance of the guitar legend, and the birthplace of the yearly "Johnny Ramone Tribute" event. The tribute continues to grow annually, becoming increasingly successful as each year passes. Johnny's strength remains timeless and immortal, along with the legacy he created with the Ramones.

OFFICIAL JOHNNY RAMONE GUITARS AVAILABLE NOW
FROM HALLMARK GUITARS USA!

Over the years many have claimed to deliver guitars authentically modeled after Johnny’s weapon of choice, but look no further... they’ve arrived. These top of the line guitars are painstakingly perfected to maximize performance; and in the true spirit of the Ramones, they’re affordably priced, without compromising quality, in an effort to make them accessible to all who will truly appreciate them.

Remaining authentic to their vintage roots, the all-new official Johnny Ramone guitars are brought to you by Hallmark Guitars USA, a company founded in 1965 by one of the core designers of Johnny’s famed 6-string originally purchased in NYC back in 1974.

Many guitar enthusiasts are unaware that Johnny Ramone used a rare, early 1965 prototype model of a Ventures II, a guitar utilizing a core design by Hallmark founder Joe Hall. This early prototype was quickly pulled by the manufacturer and replaced with a substantially different model. It’s been estimated that only 25 pieces of the original Ventures II prototypes were assembled and sold before production ceased. This was the model specifically used by Johnny Ramone to change the face of music. It’s been gone ever since.
Now, its back...

Setting them apart from those who market nothing more than a brand name under an acquired franchise, Hallmark Guitars reap the benefit of direct involvement from key players who literally worked hands-on the production, and created the design of the original guitar developed in the 1960’s. Acclaimed custom guitar builder/designer, and current Hallmark President, Bob Shade spearheads the company optimizing the potential of Johnny’s model for a present day criterion without diluting its classic sound. Hallmark has even developed new improvements, never employed on the old designs. While seamless aesthetically, these modifications perfect audible performance and resolve many issues inherent in the original model (and those that followed in its footsteps later), while still maintaining its unique, vintage tone that’s unmistakably the guitar voice of the legendary Johnny Ramone.

In addition to an incredible guitar at and affordable price, the all-new Official Johnny Ramone model guitars are available in various special editions with features such as, Johnny’s facsimile signature on the pick guard, official Johnny Ramone Army headstock (featuring a portrait of Johnny by world renowned artist Shepard Fairey of Obey/Giant), special Ltd. Ed. camouflage JRA finish, period pickup choices, plus a variety of custom logo cases, including alligator skin with official Johnny Ramone eagle seal emblazoned in gold ink.

Fall-in Johnny Commandos, perfect your down-stroke and make some history of your own with the all-new, Official Johnny Ramone Guitars available now from Hallmark Guitars USA.

6TH ANNUAL JOHNNY RAMONE TRIBUTE – EXCLUSIVE VIDEOS ONLINE NOW!

Photo: Paul Redmond/Getty Images

With each passing year, momentum for the Annual Johnny Ramone Tribute only continues to grow stronger. The 6th Annual event held on July 25th, 2010 in Los Angeles, CA was no exception, having been the most successful and memorable one to date by far. With a consistent increase in interest, appreciation and attendance from fans all over the world, as well as enthusiasm from media and entertainment industry personalities alike; the crowd was as diverse as the events that transpired in honor of the immortal rock icon. The annual tribute, presented by Linda Ramone, (Johnny’s wife and companion of over two-decades) and JRA Chief of Staff John Cafiero, was held at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, home of the 8-ft Johnny Ramone Memorial statue.

Celebrity guests and attendees included Rock and Roll Hall of Famers: Kirk Hammett of Metallica & Ramones founding member and original drummer/producer Tommy Ramone, actress Rose McGowan, Sex Pistols' Steve Jones, artist Shepard Fairey, musician and TV personality Kelly Osbourne, Ren & Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi, guitarist Billy Zoom of X, musician Pete Yorn, fashion designer Tarina Tarantino and many more.

Special guests also included a fantastic collective of cast and crew from Roger Corman’s 1979 Cult Classic “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” (a film centered on and starring the Ramones themselves). Vince Lombardi High alum appearing live and in-person to meet and greet Ramoniacs included PJ Soles (Riff Randall), Dey Young (Kate Rambeau), Mary Woronov (Principal Togar), Loren Lester (Fritz Hansel), Screenwriters Richard Whitley and Russ Dvonch (who also portrayed the freshman stuffed in the locker in the film’s opening sequence), & director of cinematography Dean Cundy. Just prior to shooting “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School”, Dean had worked with PJ Soles rolling camera on John Carpenter’s groundbreaking slasher-film prototype “Halloween” (1978). Years after shooting the Ramones-centric cult classic, Dean would go on to lens Hollywood blockbusters for Steven Spielberg including Jurassic Park. An autograph signing was held with the cast and crew, joined by Tommy Ramone at the head of the table, posing for pictures and signing anything and everything the fans brought along.

Indie 103.1 conducted a live broadcast on site hosted by radio personality Joe Escalante (of the Vandals). The broadcast was fed over the PA throughout the cemetery grounds and simultaneously streamed worldwide on the internet. Indie 103 offered listeners a great mix of punk music (both old & new) plus live interviews with special guests for a solid 2-hour block.

Films screened after dark on a 24-ft mausoleum wall kicking things off with a reel of vintage exploitation trailers, including a rare sci-fi cameo from Johnny Ramone! Johnny, (an avid fan of cult and horror films), had been coerced into making a cameo in an obscure scf-fi film called “Stranded” starring close friend Vincent Gallo. JRA Chief of Staff John Cafiero revealed the little known cult film factoid to the audience, enlisting the help of actress Rose McGowan to explain the bizarre back-story shortly before the clip was shown.

A beautiful all-new anamorphic transfer of “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” (out now on DVD and Bluray from Shout Factory) opened the feature presentation to thousands of eager fans seated on the grounds of Hollywood Forever. The double feature concluded with #1 on Johnny Ramone’s top 10 list of horror film favorites, “The Bride of Frankenstein”. To celebrate the screening, both Frankenstein’s monster and his Bride were on hand to pose for pictures with fans and present the film. Ren & Stimpy creator John K. shared a story about James Whale’s 1935 horror classic serving as an inspiration to one of the most popular cartoons in his infamous animated series, while longtime friend to Johnny and horror film aficionado Kirk Hammett provided insight on the Universal classic as well as his friendship with the late, great, Johnny Ramone.

To see all of this and more, check out some exclusive video footage from the event courtesy of the JRA, and stay tuned for more coming soon including interviews with the cast and crew of Rock ‘n’ Roll High School!

Dee Dee Ramone will forever be an enigmatic punk rock icon. While most are familiar with his musical legacy as a founding member and songwriter in the world famous Ramones, many are less aware of his talent for art and painting. Like Dee Dee, the work is rebellious, dynamic, eccentric and comedic. An exhibition of over thirty original pieces have been assembled, many of which will be displayed for the very first time at this extraordinary event sanctioned by Dee Dee’s Estate to honor the rock legend.

Rare, vintage images of Dee Dee have been cherry-picked from the critically acclaimed, Jenny Lens Photo Archive and will be available for purchase as oversized, signed, numbered, museum quality prints. Hailed as the most published first-wave west coast punk photographer in the history of the movement, Jenny will share her experiences with the Ramones at the opening night reception, specifically citing Dee Dee as the reason she picked up a camera initiating her prolific body of work from 1976-1980.

A special Limited Edition, 18” x 24” screen-printed event poster featuring one of Dee Dee’s quintessential self-portraits: “Dee Dee Ramone: The Blue Dragon” will be released starting at 7pm on September 18th. The print, limited to an edition of 150 pcs, also incorporates the iconic Ramones Eagle logo, appearing courtesy of Ramones Productions Inc. in support of the event.

Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the general public. A portion of net proceeds from the sale of the Ltd Ed. screen-printed event poster and archival photos will benefit the LA Regional Food bank via donation in Dee Dee’s name.

Barbara Ramone-Zampini, wife of the late seminal punk legend and longtime collaborator in his solo career in both music and art explains: "It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to share these rare works with fans to fully appreciate in person. Dee Dee’s spirit truly lives in these paintings and when you experience them up close, its very obvious. He always talked about helping children & gave to the homeless all the time. Dee Dee was very generous, more than most will ever know. I think he'd be really proud that he continues to help people today through his art."

John Cafiero, manager for Dee Dee Ramone, LLC & Chief of Staff of the Johnny Ramone Army states: “I think it’s a great way to pay homage to Dee Dee. He was as individualistic as anyone will ever be, so to have an event reflective of his unique persona and wildly creative spirit was really important to us. I’m confident this is it. I know he’ll be there celebrating with us and thrilled that people are appreciating his life’s work on so many different levels.”

This special birthday memorial will celebrate the many facets of Dee Dee Ramone, and special guests will reflect on the man, his music, and an eclectic life of artistic fulfillment.

5TH ANNUAL JOHNNY RAMONE TRIBUTE REACHES RECORD HIGH ATTENDANCE!

PHOTO GALLERY NOW ONLINE

The 5th Annual Johnny Ramone memorial tribute was the largest ever, with thousands of fans gathering from all over the world to pay homage to the legendary guitarist and take part in a multitude of events, attractions and festivities leading up to the World Premiere screening of the original 1968 cult classic “Night of the Living Dead”, shown for the first time ever in 3D!”

The special outdoor event, presented by Linda Ramone in association with the JRA, took place on Saturday October 3rd in Los Angeles, CA. Now in its fifth year, the Tribute is held annually at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, home of the 8 ft. bronze, Johnny Ramone memorial statue and gravesite of legendary bassist Dee Dee Ramone.

The eclectic mix of fans, Hollywood celebrities and rockers in attendance included actress Rose McGowan, actress Rosanna Arquette, actress PJ Soles, actress Virginia Madsen, actors David Arquette and Vincent Gallo, Sex Pistols' Steve Jones, musician Pete Yorn, X’s Billy Zoom, radio personality Joe Escalante of the Vandals, Gilby Clarke of Guns n’ Roses, Stan Lee of The Dickies, Jeff McDonald of Redd Kross, Charlotte Caffey of the GoGos and many more.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, founding member and sole survivor of the original lineup, drummer and producer Tommy Ramone appeared with youngest member CJ Ramone (who joined the band in ‘89 through to their retirement in ‘96). The duo signed autographs for the legions of Ramoniacs who patiently waited on consistently filled lines that ran several hundred fans deep at a time.

"This is something Johnny definitely planned before he died. He was always 15 steps ahead of everyone.” Stated original drummer and founding member Tommy Ramone. “It is very gratifying to see Ramones fans gather together for events like this. It gives us the opportunity to keep the Ramones legacy alive and to share special times together.”

After dark, movie screenings kicked off with Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee & Tommy: THE RAMONES in “IT’S ALIVE”. The legendary show had been unattainable for decades until it was unearthed only a couple of short years ago. Featuring the Ramones in their prime, filmed LIVE IN CONCERT on New Years Eve 1977, the classic performance captures the intensity and raw energy that legends are made of. In the words of Johnny Ramone himself, this is truly “The Ramones at their best”...

Jeff McDonald of the band Redd Kross had this to say: “The event was so cool and “It's Alive” is proof that the Ramones were one of the greatest bands of all time up there with the Beatles and the Stones.”

The full-length Ramones concert was screened outdoors, after dark against a 24-ft mausoleum wall in a double feature concluding with the WORLD PREMIERE of the 1968 cult classic “NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD” in 3D! PassmoreLab presented the debut of its new high-def, colorized, 3D print of one of Johnny Ramone’s top 10 horror film favorites on a 41-ft polarized screen provided by Senova in support of the event and the cause. The event was a fundraiser with net proceeds benefiting the Johnny Ramone research fund at USC Westside Prostate Cancer Center lead by Dr. David Agus.

"This year’s event was spectacular and turned out to be everything we’d hoped for," said John Cafiero, Chief of Staff of the Johnny Ramone Army. "It was just a great night all around. The event was rich and diverse as a whole and so was the crowd. Commandos assembled from all over the world and it was the biggest turnout we’ve ever seen at the annual Tribute. I think Johnny would be proud.”

Fans enjoyed a full evening of Rock ‘N Roll celluloid in both 2D and 3D with the vintage 1977 Ramone’s concert film “It’s Alive”; the rarely-seen “Rock ‘N Roll High School” original theatrical trailer - introduced by special guest PJ Soles (who starred as Riff Randall in the film), plus opening featurettes of animated music videos from the Johnny Ramone Army and the world premiere of Osaka Popstar’s “Wicked World” video in 3D; NVIDIA’s new 3D Vision presentation of the horror game “Resident Evil 5”; and never-before-seen 3D photos of Johnny Ramone himself.

The screenings concluded with the 3D World Premiere of George Romero’s original 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead, Now in 3D!” which was superbly introduced by actress and JRA affiliate Rose McGowan, a close friend of Ramone for many years.

“We had a huge turnout! What can I say? It was for the love of Johnny Ramone, a great cause and fantastic entertainment,” reflects McGowan. “Johnny would’ve been thrilled that so many people love & respect The Ramones.”

"Night of the Living Dead" was one of Johnny Ramone's favorite films, listed at #4 in his top 10 horror favs of all time. Attendees of the 5th annual Johnny Ramone Tribute had the opportunity to see it in 3D for the first time anywhere and received free commemorative Johnny Ramone Army 3D glasses upon entering.

“I think Johnny would have been very proud. He loved horror movies, and would have been thrilled that “Night of the Living Dead in 3D!” had its world premiere at his tribute, in front of so many fans,” said Linda Ramone, wife of the legendary guitarist.

"Night of the Living Dead", one of the greatest low budget cult movies ever made and originally shot in black and white over 40 years ago, was painstakingly restored, colorized and converted, frame by frame into full 3D using PassmoreLab's proprietary technology. The process, which took over 12 months to complete at a cost greater than the film's original production budget, was no small feat.

“It was great to see this all come together," said James Humann, producer at PassmoreLab. "We are fans ourselves, and were happy to be a part of such an amazing event!"

George A. Romero's “Night of the Living Dead” is considered one of the most influential independent films ever produced. Generally dismissed at the time of its release, the film appeared on the midnight-movie circuit in the early 1970s and gradually built a following. Recognizing the film's significance to its genre, the Museum of Modern Art was one of the first institutions to screen “Night of the Living Dead” years before the film achieved commercial success via its cult status.

The 1968 low budget cult film has been deemed "historically, culturally or aesthetically important" by the National Film Registry, cited in the American Film Institute’s 100 important thrillers and listed at #9 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. Critic Rex Reed wrote, "If you want to see what turns a B-movie into a classic... don't miss Night of the Living Dead. It is unthinkable for anyone seriously interested in horror movies not to see it."

Special homage was also paid to Legendary Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone . Over 20 original paintings by Dee Dee were exhibited on site in an art show curated by his wife, Barbara Ramone who was on hand to meet and greet the fans.

"I think it’s about time for all of this stuff to come out," said Barbara Ramone, wife of the late seminal bassist and founding member of the Ramones. "Dee Dee is still here. That's very obvious. His spirit lives in these paintings."

Barbara personally hand picked 10 different paintings by Dee Dee to be reproduced and offered as 18" x 24" archival prints in an edition strictly limited to 20 numbered pieces of each. The edition was printed directly from Dee Dee's original art and all proceeds from sales of the Ltd. edition prints benefited the LA Regional Foodbank, donated on behalf of Dee Dee Ramone.

"I wanted to see homeless people and children benefit directly. Dee Dee always wanted to help children & went out of his way to give to the homeless all the time.” Remembers Barbara Ramone. “I think he'd be proud to know that his art continues to do that today."

A rare memorabilia exhibit was curated by longtime Ramones artistic director Arturo Vega, displaying stage worn clothing and other rare artifacts from the Ramones historic career.

Clear Channel’s Star 98.7 FM was on site with DJ Joe Sib (of the band Wax) & “Complete Control Radio” broadcasting live via remote from the event with interviews, on air giveaways of JRA prize packs, music and more.

To heighten the 3D festivities, NVIDIA, a leader in graphic technology, showcased its award-winning “3D Vision” giving attendees the chance to play this year’s hottest horror game, Resident Evil 5 for free. Fans witnessed RE 5 transformed from a standard game into a jump-out-of-your-seat, 3D experience. For more on NVIDIA and their involvement at the 5th Annual Johnny Ramone tribute, click here to read their press release.

Last but not least, everyone who attended was a part of the filming for a yet-untitled Hi-Definition 2D documentary capturing the raw, emotional, and endearing moments of the 5th Annual Johnny Ramone Tribute. The forthcoming documentary will chronicle the day-long rock-icon tribute event attended by thousands -- as told by the people who were there: his loyal fans, trusted comrades, the attending celebrities and rock musicians Johnny influenced through his celebrated career. More details will be announced as they develop. Until then, for more info, read the official press release.

Actor/Director Vincent Gallo, who was also a close friend of Johnny’s concluded of the event: “Tonight is a great night, but at the same time it makes me sad because it makes me realize how much I miss my friend."

When asked how Johnny would’ve described the night in two words, Linda Ramone replied: “fucking cool....”

JOHNNY RAMONE MEMORABILIA AUCTIONED FOR CHILDREN’S CHARITY

To help celebrate the holiday season, an auction of designer wreaths was held to benefit the Children’s Action Network. All one-of-a-kind creations, the wreaths had been interpreted by artists and designers in materials ranging from crystals, rhinestones, orchids, pretzel bread, and one in homage to Johnny Ramone made entirely of Johnny-related artifacts and Ramones memorabilia. The custom wreath, designed by Linda Ramone, was highly sought after in the bidding. The auction earned more than $35,000.00 to help the charity raise awareness about children in foster care and find them permanent homes.

The LA Times  reports: Linda Ramone's design paid tribute to her late husband, the pioneering punk rocker Johnny Ramone, with logo patches, pins and a mini-leather jacket. "Johnny always wore pins on his jacket," she said.

JOHNNY RAMONE JOINS JOHN WAYNE, MARILYN MONROE, MARLON BRANDO,
& OTHER POP CULTURE ICONS TO “BREAK IN THEIR JEANS”

The Ramones: Johnny, Joey & Dee Dee are prominently featured in MasterCard’s new “Legends” campaign running nationwide now through Aug. 31st, 2009. The campaign includes a new :30 Priceless® TV spot that features classic scenes of pop culture icons in jeans -- from Marilyn Monroe and Marlon Brando to The Ramones. The voiceover questions whether they might look better in different styles, but fittingly concludes “The perfect pair of jeans: Priceless.”

The Ramones footage was taken from the legendary “Its Alive” concert filmed on New Years Eve 1977. Although not seen in the TV spot, Tommy Ramone is indeed on drums behind Johnny, Joey & Dee Dee on the frontline.

It’s truly rewarding for all of us in the JRA to see Johnny and the Ramones appropriately depicted in such good company. The fact that John Wayne was one of Johnny Ramone’s heroes makes the correlation even more gratifying. It would have meant a lot to him to be recognized as a true American icon.

CLICK BELOW TO VIEW THE SPOT ONLINE NOW THROUGH AUG 31ST.

MasterCard invites you to ‘Break in a Pair of Jeans’ this summer with their national campaign. Visit www.priceless.com/jeans to learn more & register online for a chance to win.

A few words from Shepard about the piece:

“I first got into the Ramones in 1984 and they quickly became one of my favorite groups of all time. I was recently honored to be asked to do the logo for the Johnny Ramone Army. I was very pleased with the logo and asked if I could make a fine art piece of the illustration. This poster was created from the fine art piece. There are two color ways. A black and gold color way is available through Obey Giant, and a black and red version is available through Johnny Ramone’s Official online store. Check them both out.” –Shepard

The Johnny Ramone fine art piece Shepard is referring to immediately sold for an impressive $15,000.00 in his recent solo show “The Duality of Humanity”.

For those with a taste for fine art looking for a more affordable alternative, the limited edition print by Shepard Fairey is available now in a joint venture between Obey Giant and the JRA.

Aside from being an incredible visual artist, Shepard is a longtime Ramones fan:

“I saw the Ramones three times, but the show I saw in the fall of 1988 at the Living Room in Providence R.I. was the most intense. The Living Room should have held 500, but in Providence clubs paid off the cops and there were probably 1,000 people in the venue. Jane's Addiction opened up and raised the energy level. When the Ramones came on the crowd was ready to go nuts. I was near the stage and the crowd surged forward compressing everyone so tightly that I thought my ribs would be crushed. I could actually pick my feet off the ground simultaneously without using my hands. The Ramones played non-stop, no breaks between songs for about two hours. The band was super tight. Johnny leaned into the crowd and didn't even take his leather jacket off for an hour even though it was sweaty as hell in there. Joey's hair was in his eyes but he stayed planted in front of the mic and sounded great. Providence loves the Ramones, so the crowd energy never waned. At certain points I felt like I was going to suffocate or be crushed, but I refused to give up my spot right at the front. It may seem weird to say you are having the time of your life fighting for your life, but that's the only way I can describe that show.”

– Shepard Fairey

2008 JOHNNY RAMONE TRIBUTE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ONE YET!

STREAMING LIVE RADIO BROADCAST - AUDIO ARCHIVE NOW ONLINE

A special outdoor event was held in memory of Legendary Ramones Guitarist JOHNNY RAMONE on Friday August 1st, 2008 at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, home of the 8-ft tall, bronze Johnny Ramone memorial statue.

The tribute, benefiting Johnny’s prostate cancer research charity (Cedars-Sinai, lead by Dr. David Agus), has been an annual event in Los Angeles for nearly half a decade. The 2008 tribute was reportedly the most successful one to date boasting the highest attendance yet, along with an appearance by three of the world famous Ramones attending and signing autographs endlessly for the wealth of devoted Ramones fans flooding the grounds. The site was also adorned with celebrity guests including actress Rose McGowan, Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea & John Frusciante, Stray Cats’ Slim Jim Phantom, Billy Zoom of X and many more intermixed with the extended Ramones family of fans and friends gathered to honor the rock legend.

“Johnny would have been really excited about this. He loved being Johnny Ramone all day long.” Linda Ramone, Johnny’s wife and host of the annual event, said proudly. “He would have loved to see Ramones fans paying tribute to him. He always said Ramones fans are the best fans in the world”.

Ramoniacs of all ages waited patiently on winding lines that were consistently full for at least three (if not more) hours straight leading to the autograph booth where Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, producer, founding member and original drummer Tommy Ramone ("Leave Home", "Rocket to Russia" & more) and Ramones bassist circa 1989-1996 CJ Ramone ("Loco Live", "Adios Amigos" & more) were seated. The duo signed anything and everything at the fan’s requests, posed for pictures and provided up close and personal time to all, making every minute worth the wait it took to get to the front of the line.

“It is very gratifying to see Ramones fans gather together for events like this.” States founding member Tommy Ramone. “It gives us the opportunity to keep the Ramone legacy alive, and to share special times together.”

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Ramones drummer Marky Ramone ("Road to Ruin", "End of the Century" & more), could also be found signing autographs, posing for photos and holding court with fans near Johnny’s memorial statue.

A full-length Ramones concert was screened outdoors, after dark on a 24-foot mausoleum wall in a double feature with the controversial 1932 cult classic FREAKS. The concert, “Ramones Live at Provinssirock Finland”, was screened in its entirety for the first time since its original broadcast on European TV over twenty years ago.

Special guest, Flea (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), appeared live and in-person to introduce the vintage performance and shared a personal memory about what went on behind the scenes that rainy night in Finland over two decades ago. Apparently the Chili Peppers (who were also on the bill of the 1988 Festival) decided to strip down naked and run across the stage during the song “Cretin Hop” in the Ramones set (which was televised live). The prank, intended to endear themselves to the Ramones, totally backfired. Johnny was furious and gave the Chili Peppers an earful after the show. Ironically, years later, Johnny & the Chili Peppers would become close friends.

Concluding the night was FREAKS one of Johnny Ramones’ top 10 horror film favorites of all time. FREAKS is highly relevant in Ramones culture having served as the inspiration for the classic song "Pinhead" (on the sophomore album “Leave Home"). The wedding cup scene in the film spawned the lyric "Gabba Gabba we accept you, one of us" (originally "Gooble Gobble" in the film) which mutated into the Ramones tag line "Gabba Gabba Hey”!

CJ Ramone comments: “I really had a great time at the Johnny Ramone Memorial. I love getting to hang out with the fans again and seeing Tommy and Marky Ramone. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. My favorite part was watching "Freaks". I hope to be able to come back next year and do it all again. Big thanks to Linda Ramone and John Cafiero who did a killer job of putting it all together.”

“I’ve never seen a cemetery so full of life.” states JRA commandant (and Osaka Popstar frontman) John Cafiero. “Its a testament to the power of Johnny and the Ramones. Through most of my life I never felt the Ramones got the props they truly deserved and it’s incredibly satisfying to see this come to pass as an adult. Times have finally caught up with them and now they’ll live forever. There’s never a shortage of Ramones fans and the world is full of Johnny Commandos.”

Indie 103 offered a live radio broadcast of the event hosted by Indie 103 morning man (and Vandals’ bassist) Joe Escalente. Escalante (a Ramones disciple himself) did a fantastic job hosting the live broadcast and capturing the spirit of the event on air. He reflects: “In all my years of doing remotes at Indie, the Johnny Ramone tribute was by far the most successful. From the stellar guests that came by the booth for a chat, to the crowd of listeners watching it all go down, to the beautiful surroundings, it ranks as one of the highlights of my radio career. Let's do it again!”

Click here for a streaming audio archive of the full LIVE RADIO BROADCAST hosted by Indie 103.1’s Joe Escalante. The nearly hour long block is commercial free and includes interviews with many of the guests and participants mentioned above, plus lots more including a healthy dose of Ramones classics scattered throughout the interviews. Click here for the playlist from the broadcast.

Click here to see the promotional ad for the event, listen to the original radio spots along with Johnny Ramone stories and memories from Henry Rollins, Rosanna Arquette, Rose McGowan, Slim Jim Phantom & artist Shepard Fairey that originally aired on Indie 103.1 the week leading into the Tribute event on Aug 1, 2008 in LA.

JOHNNY RAMONE FINE ART UNVEILED AT SHEPARD FAIREY’S DUALITY OF HUMANITY SOLO SHOW

The first of a select few original and fully authorized Johnny Ramone fine art pieces by Obey Giant Artist Shepard Fairey have surfaced in The Duality of Humanity running Sept. 13th - October 4th, 2008 at the White Walls Gallery in San Francisco, CA.

A 30” x 44” Johnny Ramone portrait (based on Shepard’s illustration commissioned by the JRA) has been unveiled. The piece is an incredible monument to the legendary guitar icon and sold immediately, days before the show even opened. The 30” x 44” stencil collage on canvas fetched an impressive $15,000.00. A similar, yet one of a kind, 30” x 44” stencil collage portrait of Johnny on paper is also featured, priced at $6,500.00.

These large mixed media pieces on canvas and paper have been covered with carefully collaged ephemera, self-printed patterns and found clippings from printed media. The backgrounds provide texture and visual subtext, which at times allow apropos words and images to bleed through the iconic images printed and painted over them. The multiple layers create a sense of depth, but also bring in temporal elements through preserved news clippings, historic images and vintage printing effects. It is the images in the foreground, however, that give the work its power.

Over 100 pieces will go on display at White Walls Gallery in this show which marks an evolution for the artist, whose unique form of reverse propaganda emerged from the spirit of the punk movement.

A total of seven Johnny Ramone fine art pieces will be hand produced by Shepard personally, only a few of which will be made available to the general public. Two can be found (among other new works by Shepard Fairey) in The Duality of Humanity.

SHEPARD FAIREY OF OBEY JOINS THE JRA!

World-renowned Artist Shepard Fairey of Obey Giant  has enlisted in the Johnny Ramone Army and created the very first in a series of new designs representing the JRA! Shepard, a longtime Ramones fan proudly rose to the occasion with an iconic illustration of the legendary guitarist in action, along with a series of variant JRA insignias encompassing it.

The first T-shirt to bear Shepard’s primary JRA insignia is available now @ our online store in olive green for both men & women. Look for more great stuff to follow in the future.

Men's
(Black available)

Women's - SOLD OUT

A handful of fine art pieces by Shepard himself, based on the illustration, will surface in Obey Giant gallery exhibitions. When we say a handful, we aren’t kidding either. A maximum of seven fine art pieces will be hand rendered by Shepard personally, only a few of which will be made available to the general public. Each of the seven pieces will be a unique, one of a kind tribute to the man who created and defined the punk rock guitar sound.

A special limited edition print of the illustration is being designed by Shepard and will be produced in two color ways in a joint venture between Obey Giant and the JRA. One color
way will be available exclusively from the JRA online shop and the other exclusively from Obey Giant.

Look for more details to come and click here to listen to a sound byte of Shepard talking about the project with host Steve Jones (of the Sex Pistols) on “Jonesy’s Jukebox” on Indie 103.1.
